Network security is complicated, and as such, you need to have considerable knowledge of it to ensure that your business is as secure as possible against the plethora of threats out there. Thankfully, you don’t have to do it alone. We want to give you some insight into the dos and don’ts of network security.
## The Dos
### Firewalls and Antivirus
You definitely want to implement preventative security measures that can keep threats out of your network while also detecting and eliminating them as they are discovered. To this end, a firewall and antivirus double-whammy is crucial to protect your network.
### System and Software Updates
If you aren’t updating your software regularly, you could be susceptible to potential threats, especially since they are becoming more dangerous over time in response to more powerful security solutions. Patch these vulnerabilities before you suffer a data breach.
### Access Control
Segmenting off access to your data based on user role is important, especially since different roles will not require access to the same data types. You can further augment security through the use of multi-factor authentication (MFA), like smartphone passcodes and biometric credentials.
## The Don’ts
### Hope Employees Comply with Security
You need to train your employees on security best practices, period. If you don’t, you are limiting the effectiveness of your own security solutions. Phishing attacks are the most common way for hackers to infiltrate networks, and considering that security measures are getting stronger all the time, it makes sense that hackers would try to circumvent them through your employees. Train your team on security and implement a password security policy while you’re at it.
### Put All Eggs in Network Security’s Basket
You can often prevent threats from surfacing thanks to proactive and preventative measures, but you can’t rely on them to work all the time. Instead, you should be ready and prepared for them to fail so that you can respond effectively if/when they do. Implement other measures like data backup and disaster recovery to mitigate the damage done by potential hacks. Aside from helping you recover from attacks, they are good solutions to have in general.
### Ignore Potential Data Breaches
One of the worst things you can do is ignore a potential data breach or be unaware of it for too long. Sometimes, employees might feel like they cannot come forward if they think they have let a threat onto your network or made a mistake. Encourage them to come clean so that you can take appropriate measures to combat the threat and prioritize business security more than punitive measures.
