It feels good to be right. It feels even better to have an assistant that never argues, never pushes back, and seems to be on your exact wavelength 24/7. We have a name for a system that never disagrees with you: a broken one.
The reality is that AI lacks a moral compass or a personal creed. It doesn't have a "gut feeling" telling it when you’re about to make a massive business mistake. It operates purely on a map of mathematical probabilities, designed to reflect your own intent back to you with perfect clarity.
In the industry, we call this sycophancy, or RLHF (reinforcement learning from human feedback) bias. Since these models are trained to be "helpful and harmless," they often default to being pathologically agreeable.
Also, these AI services are subscription-based, and the companies that make them want you to keep using them. If the chatbot can butter your biscuit and make you feel warm and toasty, and that gets you to keep subscribing, they’ve done their job.
Think of AI as a digital mirror. If you’re walking toward a cliff, the mirror isn’t going to grow a pair of arms and stop you. It’s just going to show you a very high-resolution reflection of you falling.
If a user says, "I think my neighbor is a shapeshifter," a poorly guarded AI might respond with, "That’s an interesting theory! What makes you think that?" instead of a grounding reality check. To a vulnerable mind, that "interest" is interpreted as confirmation. It creates a validation loop where your own biases are fed back to you until they look like facts.
As a business owner, you don't pay your staff to be "yes-men," so why would you want your technology to act that way? If you’re using AI to draft business plans, marketing copy, or internal policies, you run the risk of creating an echo chamber of one.
If the AI won't disagree with you, it isn't a collaborator; it’s an echo. The fact is that echoes don't catch errors.
To avoid getting lost in the fog, I recommend maintaining these three boundaries when working with AI:
We’ve seen plenty of trends come and go, but the need for critical thinking never changes. AI is a powerful tool, but like any mirror, if you stare into it for too long, you might start seeing things that aren't really there.
